Impact of Extreme Weather on Power System Blackouts and Forced Outages: New Challenges
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper focuses on the impact of extreme weather on power system outages. Extreme weather condition impacts of interest are listed, including both direct and consequential events. Their impact on power system outages are discussed, concerning both blackouts and component failure. Prospects for estimating weather condition impacts on the frequency of blackouts and on equipment and system failures are assessed, and a suggestion of the potential research areas is presented. Index Term-extreme weather, power system, blackout, component failure

Towards Simulation and Risk Assessment of Weather-Related Cascading Outages
Weather and environmental factors are verified to have played significant roles in historical major cascading outages and blackouts. Therefore, in the simulation and risk assessment of cascading outages in power systems, it is necessary to consider the weather and environmental effects. This paper proposes a method for the risk assessment of weather-related cascading outages. Based on the analy...
متن کاملExamining Criticality of Blackouts in Power System Models with Cascading Events
As power system loading increases, larger blackouts due to cascading outages become more likely. We investigate a critical loading at which the average size of blackouts increases sharply to examine whether the probability distribution of blackout sizes shows the power tails observed in real blackout data. Three different models are used, including two simulations of cascading outages in electr...

Abstract: Blackouts are among the main threats to the security of electric power systems. Cascading failures are known as the most important agent for creating blackouts. Transmission lines are the basic equipment of power networks that their outage can make subsequent cascading outages. In this paper, based on the application of decision tree a new approach is proposed for online identificatio...
متن کاملPower Outages, Extreme Events and Health: a Systematic Review of the Literature from 2011-2012
Background Extreme events (e.g. flooding) threaten critical infrastructure including power supplies. Many interlinked systems in the modern world depend on a reliable power supply to function effectively. The health sector is no exception, but the impact of power outages on health is poorly understood. Greater understanding is essential so that adverse health impacts can be prevented and/or mit...
متن کاملPower Differential based Wide Area Protection
Current differential based wide area protection (WAP) has recently been proposed as a technique to increase the reliability of protection systems. It increases system stability and can prevent large contingencies such as cascading outages and blackouts. This paper describes how power differential protection (PDP) can be used within a WAP and shows that the algorithm operates correctly for a...
